Doctor Who Officially Bringing Back Cybermen
Doctor Who is officially bringing back the creepy Cybermen many have come to freak out over. Notably, these new Cybermen are different from the ones introduced by the series before. The BBC is bringing the Cybermen from the planet Mondas back.
These cyborg aliens in the original Doctor Who series first gave fans the creeps in William Hartnell’s final story of the “Tenth Planet,” will be featured in Peter Capaldi’s final season. Gizmodo reports that the creepy Mandasian Cybermen will appear in episodes 11 and 12 of Doctor Who.
The BBC’s official Twitter account broke the wonderful news to fans of Doctor Who, revealing that the Cybermen will finally return and even provided a picture to further tease the fans. The best part of this marvelous come back is that the incoming Cybermen will look very similar to the original.
Apparently, the Cybermen were never seen again after they made their creepy debut in the 1966 version of Doctor Who. Now that they are making a return to television, some say that the new Cybermen might be the creepiest version of them all.
Looking back, the ever creepy Mandasian Cybermen were created by Gerry Davis and Dr. Kit Pedler, the unofficial scientific adviser behind the original Doctor Who series. The idea behind the Cybermen’s creation is to serve as a reminder to fear artificial enhancement and body modification. Following their fearsome purpose was the creepy representation present in their design.
Many fans found themselves disappointed when Doctor Who first featured the Cybermen back in 2006. The Cybermen from previous seasons were clad in steel armor and definitely looked like Iron Man knockoffs. That being said, BBC made a much-needed comeback for the Cybermen slated to appear in Doctor Who Season 10.
When Doctor Who returns to BBC on April, fans will be greeted with the familiarly creepy flesh-silver hybrid with the same unmoving face. These new Cybermen will have the same organic hands attached to strange rubber body and the skull-like face wrapped in a tight cloth.
Moreover, Doctor Who Season 10 seems to have done a good job reincarnating the Manasian Cybermen, they even got the creepy electronic voice right. Everytime the Cybermen attempt to speak, their mouths would open up wide and stay that way until they finished.
There are definitely many things to look forward to when Doctor Who returns for its tenth and final season, including new characters and the return of a few old favorites. The return of the Cybermen is not the only way BBC’s Doctor Who is paying patronage to the original 1966 series. Apparently, Dalek’s return was also hinted in the new Doctor Who trailer as reported by Screen Rant.
New characters will also be introduced in the farewell season of Doctor Who and Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat are definitely doing everything to make this last season memorable. In light of this, an old favorite character, Missy (Michelle Gomez) will be back for the show’s last run as well.
Another great thing to look forward to is the three-party story featured in Doctor Who Season 10 which is dedicated to Bill and the Doctor as per Digital Spy. The latter will run for through episodes 6 to episode 8 and will introduce a new monster called The Monks. This was featured in the trailer for the upcoming season of Doctor Who and apparently, this new foe will be present in more than one episode.
The three-part story is yet again another way for the show to pay patronage to the original 1966 series. Apparently, this will be the first time in decades that a three-party story will be featured on the show. Similar to how the original Doctor Who series made their three-parter in 1989 since they are known for having standalone episodes, or a two-part episode at most.
Moreover, having a three-part episode in a season is a risk to take, especially since some viewers may opt to pass on watching the episodes if they already missed one. The presence of a multi-episode story may affect fans who are used to the standalone episodes that allow Doctor Who to cater to a casual audience.
On the bright side, Doctor Who has been successful with its two-part episodes in the past, the same success is also possible for this season’s attempt at a three-parter. Other than that, the creative minds behind Doctor Who seem to have opted to rely on the loyal viewers for the show’s final season, rather than the casual fans.
The tenth and final season of BBC’s Doctor Who is starting to feel more and more promising. The hints on the return of old-time favorites, new characters, and the revival of the Doctor’s biggest enemies, all contribute to a final season that is bound to be spectacular. Doctor Who Season 10 will start its final run on BBC One and BBC America on April 15.
